Here are practical travel tips for scuba divers to help make your dive trip smoother, safer, and more enjoyable:
Before You Go
Research Your Destination
-
Check best dive seasons (currents, visibility, water temp).
-
Read reviews on local dive shops (PADI/SSI certified? Safety record?).
-
Know local marine life, laws, and conservation rules.
Dive Insurance
-
Consider DAN (Divers Alert Network) or equivalent.
-
Confirm coverage for dive-related medical emergencies & evacuation.
Packing Essentials
-
Must-haves: logbook, certification cards, mask/snorkel, dive computer, booties, regulator, dive torch.
-
Nice-to-haves: wetsuit (renting may be risky for fit/hygiene), reef-safe sunscreen, dry bag, slate or underwater camera.
-
Bring spare parts: O-rings, mask strap, fin strap, defog, mouthpiece.
Air Travel with Scuba Gear
Gear Tips
-
Pack regulators, computers, and masks in carry-on.
-
Put BCD, fins, wetsuit, etc. in checked luggage.
-
Consider a padded gear bag or dive-specific luggage.
Batteries & Electronics
-
Remove lithium batteries (e.g., in dive torches, computers) from checked bags.
-
Keep chargers/adapters for your destination’s power outlet.
While You're There
Stay Dive-Ready
-
Do a checkout dive to test gear and buoyancy.
-
Drink water — hydration is key for off-gassing nitrogen.
-
Avoid alcohol before diving; watch your nitrogen loading.
On the Boat
-
Bring a towel, snacks, reusable water bottle, and seasickness pills.
-
Label your gear — lots of black fins and wetsuits on dive boats!
After Dives
-
Rinse gear with fresh water daily.
-
Hang suits/booties to dry properly to prevent stink/mold.
Post-Dive Flying Rule
-
Wait at least 18 hours after multiple dives before flying.
-
Use your dive computer to monitor no-fly time.
Bonus Tips
-
Respect marine life — no touching or chasing.
-
Take only pictures, leave only bubbles.
-
Support eco-friendly dive operators & conservation efforts.
