Cleaning scuba gear properly ensures it stays in good condition and functions safely for your dives. Here's a guide to clean the essential components:

1. General Tips

  • Always rinse your gear thoroughly with freshwater after every dive to remove salt, chlorine, or debris.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals; instead, use mild detergents or specialized scuba gear cleaners.
  • Dry everything completely before storage to prevent mold or mildew.

2. Cleaning the Gear

A. Wetsuit/Drysuit

  1. Rinse thoroughly: Use fresh, lukewarm water to remove salt and sand.
  2. Clean with a mild detergent: Add wetsuit shampoo or a small amount of mild soap to a tub of water. Submerge the suit and gently scrub inside and out.
  3. Pay attention to zippers and seals: Use a soft brush to clean zippers, and consider applying zipper lubricant for smooth operation.
  4. Rinse again: Ensure all soap is removed.
  5. Dry properly: Hang the suit on a wide hanger, away from direct sunlight, to avoid UV damage.

B. Regulator

  1. Cap the first stage: Install the dust cap securely to prevent water from entering.
  2. Soak in freshwater: Place the regulator in lukewarm water (do not press the purge button while submerged).
  3. Clean thoroughly: Use a soft brush to clean around the second stage, mouthpiece, and vents.
  4. Rinse and dry: Shake off excess water and air-dry in a shaded area.

C. Buoyancy Compensator Device (BCD)

  1. Rinse the exterior: Use freshwater to remove salt and debris.
  2. Flush the interior bladder: Fill the bladder with freshwater through the inflator hose. Inflate the BCD slightly and shake it to rinse. Drain through the dump valves.
  3. Inspect and clean valves: Check for sand or debris around the valves and rinse them if needed.
  4. Dry inside and out: Inflate the BCD partially while drying to ensure airflow inside.

D. Dive Mask, Snorkel, and Fins

  1. Rinse in freshwater: Remove sand, salt, and other residues.
  2. Use mild soap: For masks, avoid harsh detergents to protect the lens coatings.
  3. Scrub gently: Clean straps, buckles, and grooves with a soft brush.
  4. Dry completely: Store in a cool, dry place.

E. Dive Computer and Accessories

  1. Rinse immediately after diving: Use freshwater to remove saltwater residue.
  2. Inspect seals: Ensure no debris is lodged in buttons or seals.
  3. Dry completely: Air-dry before storing.

F. Tanks

  1. Rinse the exterior: Use freshwater to clean the outside of the tank.
  2. Dry thoroughly: Wipe down and store in a cool, dry place.
  3. Inspect for corrosion: Check the tank valve and body for any signs of rust or damage.

3. Storage Tips

  • Store gear in a cool, dry place.
  • Hang items like wetsuits and BCDs properly to maintain their shape.
  • Keep regulators and delicate equipment in padded bags for protection.

Proper maintenance and cleaning will extend the life of your scuba gear and ensure a safe diving experience!
